Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most iconic characters of the galaxy. From being known for his diplomacy and earning the title ‘The Negotiator’ to a legendary lightsaber duelist the Jedi Order, Obi-Wan Kenobi has been one of the most well-rounded Jedibeing  in the history of Star Wars. 

One thing that makes Obi-Wan stand out amongst other Jedi of the galaxy is his compassion for the Jedi who have fallen such as Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader. Apart from this, his resilience despite the heartbreak and loss of his apprentice is admirable. Even after Anakin Skywalker's transformation into the Sith Lord Darth Vader, the exiled Obi Wan continued to keep a watchful eye on his son Luke Skywalker protecting him from any potential threats.

Obi-Wan Kenobi was born in the year 57 BBY, on the planet Stewjon. Leaving his family when he was only an infant, Obi-Wan retained faint memories of his parents and a baby whom he thought to be his brother. Such impressions of his past, he took along with him to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, for after being recognized as being sensitive to the Force at under six months of age.

Obi-Wan joined the Kybuck Clan in the Temple, which comprised Jedi younglings that train and live together. Among his new friends was Gehren and Prie. Under Jedi Masters, Obi-Wan was placed in his basic training by the age of three and was practicing simple techniques on the Force and the basic lightsaber from Master Cin Drallig.

However, the young Obi-Wan was rebellious. He often broke rules and created a reputation for himself, which made most of the Jedi Masters hesitate to accept him as their Padawan. In search of such a teacher who could make Obi-Wan's defiance disciplined, Grand Master Yoda chose him as his Padawan.

At thirteen, Obi-Wan was selected by the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn to be his Padawan learner. At first, their relationship was difficult since Qui-Gon was independent and intuitive while Obi-Wan started to develop respect for Jedi traditions. However, he respected his Master and gave his best to prove himself.

It was this period in which Obi-Wan built his first lightsaber, similar to Qui-Gon's, and then continued perfecting his abilities. He spent many late nights in the training dojos and in the Jedi Archives reading prophecies by Jedi under the care of Master Jocasta Nu. Even though work was at an all-time high, Obi-Wan sometimes had small windows of escape, like playing dejarik in Coruscant's lower levels.

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon participated in several missions, among which was a memorable visit to Kashyyyk on the Life Day holiday. Qui-Gon used this trip to teach Obi-Wan about the connection of Wookiees with the Force and their harmonious way of life. However, the celebrations were interrupted by Trandoshans who captured several Wookiees and Qui-Gon himself.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, wanting to save his Master, was willing to sacrifice himself in a plan to give up to the Trandoshans. He managed to rescue Qui-Gon and the kidnapped Wookiees with his resourcefulness and power in the Force. Through this experience, Obi-Wan learned several things: teamwork, strategy, and reliance on the Force.

Over time, Obi-Wan matured to be a serious and respectful student of the Jedi Code and learned to embody his Master's teachings. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon often disagreed with each other, but that was also the same time that made them closer to one another while facing challenges together. 

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Path to a Perfect Jedi

Between years 41 BBY to 39 BBY, Obi-Wan Kenobi was with his Master Qui-Gon Jinn for one year on planet Mandalore with the task to secure Duchess Satine Kryze. During this whole mission, bounty hunters started chasing after them, resulting in becoming fugitives to live like. This allowed them, however, to grow as a team amid danger. Kenobi formed a deep relationship with Satine, who loved to call him "Ben." However, he could not express his true feelings because he was loyal to the Jedi Code and continued his work. In fact, after completing their work, Obi-Wan Kenobi was sent back on another mission. He left Satine Kryze behind and continued to follow the Jedi way, which he had vowed to do.

In 40 BBY, Obi-Wan with his master was sent to track down the missing agricultural shipments via the Triellus trade route. The mission became violent very soon, and Qui-Gon Jinn, realizing Kenobi was not following orders, escaped alone. Obi-Wan Kenobi was unable to find a ship and was briefly held hostage, but Jinn rescued him. Having reached an accord with the Hutt, Wanbo, the Jedi were finally able to escape Teth. Returning to Coruscant, Qui-Gon Jinn reported his problems with communication to the Jedi Council, a development that disappointed Kenobi when he learned Qui-Gon Jinn was asked to join the Council. Almost immediately thereafter, Kenobi and Jinn were sent to Pijal to deal with a political coup.

On Pijal, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn protected Crown Princess Fanry during the political upheaval. They discovered a plot headed by Captain Deren and Fanry herself to destroy democracy. When Qui-Gon Jinn refused to sign the Governance Treaty, Obi-Wan was appointed to ratify it. However, during Fanry's coronation, she declared absolute power, ordering Kenobi to be attacked. Nevertheless, Kenobi assisted in a slave uprising and helped to establish a democratic assembly after Fanry's abdication. Obi-Wan Kenobi learned and experienced these for himself, where he delved deeper into the importance of sticking to his way regardless of the unorthodox teaching from Qui-Gon Jinn. This journey in itself was responsible for the making of a "Perfect Jedi," shaped both by victories and hardships by his Master.

Defeating Darth Maul and training Anakin Skywalker

In 32 BBY, after Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn had successfully rescued Queen Padmé Amidala and escaped from the blockade, they took their mission to Coruscant to report the actions of the Trade Federation. On their way, they were tricked into a trap set by Darth Maul, a Sith apprentice.

Upon arriving on the planet Tatooine to get their damaged ship repaired, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were surprised by Maul. The Sith Lord appeared from the darkness, holding his double-bladed lightsaber, thus displaying his killing skills. The corridor in which the fight occurred was narrow with walls closing around them.

Qui-Gon, determined to protect both Padmé and Anakin, engaged Maul in a fierce duel. Though skilled in combat, Qui-Gon found it difficult to keep up with Maul's constant strikes and his peculiar weapon, which forced Obi-Wan to intervene. As the battle grew hotter, Kenobi tried to help his master, but Maul's acrobatics and precision made it hard.

In the intense duel, Darth Maul separated Obi-Wan from Qui-Gon. With nobody nearby, Qui-Gon alone continued his fighting spree and relied on experience and his training as a Jedi. Vulnerable at this time, Darth Maul used perfect skill in his spin; using his double-bladed lightsaber, he hit through Qui-Gon's abdomen. Qui-Gon collapsed. His master was dying and Obi-Wan Kenobi couldn't help but reach him to avoid that mortal blow.

At his last breath, Qui-Gon turned to Obi-Wan and made a serious charge to train the young Anakin Skywalker. Filled with anguish and rage, Obi-Wan stood alone against Darth Maul and eventually overpowered him, cutting Darth Maul in two, sending his body plunging down into the very depths of the chasm. Obi-Wan prostrated himself beside his dying master, promising that he would fulfill Qui-Gon's dying wish, taking Anakin as his Padawan and continuing his master's training.

Taking Anakin Skywalker as His Apprentice

After the Battle of Naboo ended, the Jedi Council promoted Obi-Wan Kenobi to the rank of Jedi Knight. Although Yoda didn't have any problem with him granting the rank of the prestigious Jedi Knight in the Council, Yoda did have some reservations regarding taking Anakin Skywalker as Obi-Wan's apprentice. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin and Padmé Amidala were present at the funeral even long after most Jedi Council members were gone. Obi-Wan Kenobi was still mourning the loss of his late Jedi master but at the same time, he also felt that hisate master, Qui-Gon Jinn had ignored Obi-Wan Kenobi believing in the prophecies and favored Anakin Skywalker as the Chosen One. But despite all that, as he saw his mentor for the last time, he chose that he would believe in the prophecies. 

In the starting days of training Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi would see him sleeping on the floor next to his bed. Obi-Wan Kenobi realised that Anakin had lost his mother and Qui-Gon both and that's why he is afraid to let Obi-Wan disappear too. In one of their numerous adventures together, Obi-Wan Kenobi encountered a nest of gundarks. He asked Anakin Skywalker to rescue him which he did. He also taught Anakin meditation and how to levitate rocks. As warned by Yoda at the start of training Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi also had some reservations about training the Chosen One. But he casted his own intuition aside and honored his late master’s dying wish and trained Anakin Skywalker. 

Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi Knight, was sent on a mission to the planet Dallenor. There, an archaeology team had unearthed a Jedi holocron. He decided to take his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, with him as part of his training. Before leaving, Kenobi visited the Temple Archives to gather information about Dallenor and any other previous Jedi visits. But he could not find any information. Master Yoda surprisingly agreed to let Kenobi take Anakin with him on the mission.

On Dallenor, they encountered Mistress Clatriffe, who is being blackmailed by local pirates. Kenobi inspected the holocron but didn't open it as the Krypder Riders, led by Hudso Shaku appeared. Obi-Wan Kenobi repelled the riders and subordinated them. Then, Anakin Skywalker was rescued when they took him hostage. Obi-Wan was helped by Anakin Skywalker through rocks which knocked Hudso Shaku unconscious.

Later, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker visited the planet Ilum, where Anakin made his first lightsaber. Kenobi told Anakin that his lightsaber was his life. On another mission, they traveled to observe a star system that orbited a dead dwarf star. During this mission, Anakin Skywalker managed to sneak onto Kenobi's starship, and Kenobi decided to take advantage of the situation and teach Anakin about the idea of letting go.

After some time, Anakin Skywalker really couldn't stand his Jedi training and did not like being a Jedi for life. He felt like he was only 9 years old when he joined, and his whole life was being decided for him. He told Obi-Wan Kenobi that he wanted to leave the Jedi Order, but Kenobi convinced him to reconsider. Obi-Wan Kenobi went to Master Yoda and revealed the story of Anakin Skywalker to him, who told Kenobi that Anakin was still a child and it was only natural for him to ask questions. He also reminded Kenobi that he himself was quite young as a mentor. 

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda talked about the chance of Anakin leaving the Order, and Kenobi said that he would train Anakin in the Force even if he left the Jedi. But, Yoda explained that Jedi training was limited to the Jedi Order; Kenobi replied that if Anakin left, then he would leave with him.

Then, Kenobi and Anakin answered a distress signal on the planet Carnelian IV. Their shuttle was damaged, and they had to eject and land on the planet's surface. They soon discovered that the planet was not as dead as they thought, and they were attacked by airships. Obi-Wan Kenobi returned Anakin's lightsaber to him, and they fought off the attackers. They saved a group of people, including Kolara and Mother Pran, who were fighting against each other.

As they traveled the planet, they found Corpse-leeches, which were lured by dead bodies. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker attempted to use the Force to connect with the leeches, but they were not able to communicate. They boarded an airship, but Pran and Kolara took Anakin with them and deserted Kenobi. Obi-Wan Kenobi was deserted, but using the Force, he contacted the Corpse-leeches and located Anakin. 

Obi-Wan Kenobi finally found Anakin and met a man named Sera, who had sent the distress signal. Sera showed Obi-Wan his collection of artifacts and relics, and told him that both the Open and Closed factions on the planet wanted him dead. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Sera watched as Grecker's forces attacked Sera's fortress, and Obi-Wan Kenobi convinced Grecker to stop the attack. However, Mother Pran attacked with her machines, and Kenobi was saved by Anakin.

Kenobi and Anakin carried out a rescue mission targeting kidnapped Master Yoda; it was a test because they were told that indeed, Yoda had not been captured. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker passed, thus deepening their mastery as master and apprentice respectively. They also went on a mission to Taris where Obi-Wan Kenobi helped out his friend Dex by using tricks to outsmart one Tri Tellon, who had stolen from him.

Finding the Clone Army

In 22 BBY, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker were sent to deal with a border dispute on Ansion involving Presidente Shu Mai of the Commerce Guild. After completing the mission successfully, they received another assignment: to guard Senator Padmé Amidala, who had survived an assassination attempt. Upon arrival at Padmé's apartment, Kenobi warned Anakin to stay focused on the task, only to subsequently discover that the Senator plans to use herself as a bait. That night, a probe droid released into Padmé's room dangerous kouhun venom but Kenobi and Anakin sensed danger and acted soon. While Anakin killed the creatures, Kenobi jumped onto the droid as it ran away, and they engaged in a high-speed chase across Coruscant's skylanes. Anakin caught Kenobi from falling, and together, they chased the bounty hunter Zam Wesell into the Outlander Club. Kenobi disabled Wesell but could not get more information when Jango Fett silenced her with a toxic dart.

Investigation into the toxic dart had taken Obi-Wan Kenobi to the planet of Kamino, erased from the Jedi Archives. On his arrival there, he found that under the name of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, a clone army was created. There he met the bounty hunter, Jango Fett, who acted as a template for clones, and asked him a few questions regarding recent occurrences. After a short battle, Jango and his son, Boba Fett, attempted to flee in Slave I. Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to attach a tracker to their ship and chased them to the planet Geonosis.

On Geonosis, Obi-Wan piloted an asteroid field and dodged Jango Fett's attacks to uncover a major conspiracy. He discovered a secret alliance between the Trade Federation and Count Dooku, including their involvement in the assassination attempts on Padmé. He was reported to Anakin by Kenobi before he was caught by the Separatists. In jail, Dooku appeared before him and told him that the Republic was under the influence of Darth Sidious. He tried to convince Kenobi to join him in killing the Sith but Kenobi refused, saying that it was not for him to know whether the leadership of the Republic was valid or not.

Important Role in Clone Wars

With the outbreak of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, Obi-Wan Kenobi was appointed High Jedi General of the Grand Army of the Galactic Republic. He was put in charge of the Open Circle Fleet, the Third Systems Army, and the 7th Sky Corps, all of which were key units in the military campaigns of the Republic. Clone Marshal Commander Cody was his second-in-command. In their capable leadership, he led the victory over several engagements with the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Their most notable campaigns included breaking the Separatist blockade of Christophsis and dismantling crucial droid production facilities during the Second Battle of Geonosis.

In the midst of a war, Obi-Wan suffered a personal crisis as old rival Darth Maul came after him to avenge a defeat on Naboo. He was now a powerful figure of the galactic underworld who was allying with extremist mandalorians in an attempt to take over Mandalore. In this struggle he killed Satine Kryze, Duchess of Mandalore and former love of Obi-Wan. Their most definitive battle took place during the Battle of Utapau in 19 BBY. Obi-Wan Kenobi was assigned the task of killing Grievous, and he went into a fierce duel against him, killing the general with a blaster shot. This battle was to be the turning point for the Clone Wars, because it crippled the Separatist military leadership and successfully ended the Clone Wars.

Exile on Tatooine as “Ben Kenobi”

The Sith Lord Darth Sidius, who in fact was disguising himself as Emperor Palpatine, laid a plan to wipe out the Jedi Order and its members. The Jedi Purge announced by Darth Sidious meant for clone troopers to hunt out any Jedi and kill them. This Great Jedi Purge was in full action after Darth Sidius activated Order 66 which commanded clone troopers to turn against their Jedi Generals and kill them. In this chaos, Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to escape and regrouped with Yoda, another Jedi.

During this mission to escape from being assassinated, he got to know that his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker had embraced the dark side. He learned that he has now become an apprentice to Sith Lord Darth Sidius and has taken up the name Darth Vader. Ten years into exile, Obi-Wan Kenobi left the planet of Tatooine to rescue Leia Organa, who was Luke Skywalker's sister and had been kidnapped. In the course of rescuing her, Obi-Wan Kenobi had to fight by relentless pursuit of the Empire's Inquisitors and Darth Vader, his former apprentice. In the end, Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to rescue Leia Organa but at the cost of attracting Darth Vader's attention. This was a tense and suspenseful confrontation.

Later, Obi-Wan Kenobi was pursued once more by his arch enemy, Darth Maul. He wanted revenge from Obi-Wan. Shortly after, Kenobi ran into Darth Vader on the Death Star. Death Star was a giant space station to make others fear and exert dominance over the galaxy. The Death Star had a superlaser which was able to destroy entire planets. Therefore, it was a major threat to the Rebel Alliance.

As a result, The Rebel fleet launched an attack to bring down the Death Star and the destruction that it was capable of. Luke Skywalker and his friends including Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo and Chewbacca planned to bring down the Galactic Empire’s major weapon, the Death Star. The legacy of Obi-Wan Kenobi lived on in the establishment of the New Republic. Leia Organa paid him homage by naming her son Ben Solo after the legendary Jedi’s exiled name, Ben Kenobi. However, Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side deeply affected Luke Skywalker. Luke blamed himself and, to some extent, Kenobi’s teachings for Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader. Despite this, Luke’s faith in the Jedi was ultimately restored with the help of Rey, the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. In 35 ABY, the voice of Kenobi alongside many past voices helped strengthen the battle-hardened Rey for the last push against the resurrected grandfather on Exegol. This ultimately led to Sith forces into a state of inevitable defeat.
